Many Coquitlam residents spend the year gardening around their homes.

Now, they can enter a contest to get a city nod for their green thumb efforts.

Entries for the second annual Proud to Grow Here competition are being accepted until mid-October.

And the municipality’s Parks Spark Garden Team has already received double the number of submissions over last year’s run, said Sara Yastremski, Coquitlam’s parks services manager.

Nominations are being considered for the following six categories:

  • Frontage:
    • residential
    • business
    • strata
  • Balcony:
    • residential
    • business
    • strata

Part of the Coquitlam in Bloom program, the contest is designed to promote civic pride and honour the residents and business owners that beautify the city with their landscaping.

Those who take part will get a sign for their lawn to showcase their property, some city swag and an invite to a celebration in November, when the winners will be announced.

Judging, based on the category criteria, will be done in advance by a Coquitlam in Bloom committee that’s made up of sports, community and business group leaders.

Although there is no specific requirements for the type of plants, Yastremski said city crews have been adding displays with orange around town — this year’s colour for the nationwide Communities in Bloom.

“We’re not telling people what to plant,” she said. “It’s up to each individual or group to highlight what’s in their gardens. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

As well, photo entries will be posted on the city’s social media channels.

To self-nominate or recommend a neighbour’s garden for the Proud to Grow Here contest, email the Park Spark team. The city hopes to receive more than 200 entries for the 2024 gardening competition.
