The musical theatre world will be buzzing on Sunday, Jan. 26 when the OVATION! awards will be handed out to the best and brightest on last year’s stages in Metro Vancouver.
And a number of Tri-City residents — or thespians connected to the Tri-Cities — are in the run for an accolade to celebrate their work in one of the 30 musicals presented in 2024.
Here are the nominees with Tri-City ties:
Outstanding Production - Small Cast/Chamber
- tick, tick… BOOM, Vagabond Players
- directed by Tri-City resident Amanda Russell, who teaches at Coquitlam’s Lindbjerg Academy of Performing Arts
Outstanding Production - Community
- CATS, Theatre Under the Stars
- directed by former Port Coquitlam resident Ashley Wright
Outstanding choreography of a musical
- Nicol Spinola, Oliver! - Gateway Theatre
- a teacher at Tri-City Dance Centre
Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role - Community (female)
- Danica Kobayashi (Bakers Wife), Into the Woods - Studio 58
Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role (female)
- Joyce Gillespie (Dowager Empress), Anastasia - Theatre in the Country
Outstanding Performance in an Ensemble Role (male)
- Owen CB Scott (ensemble), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - CTORA Theatre
Outstanding Performance in an Ensemble Role (female)
- Jenna Lamb (Rumpleteazer), CATS - Theatre Under the Stars
Held at the St. James Community Hall in Vancouver, the awards event is the 21st organized by the APPLAUSE! Musicals Society.
