Re: Letter: Changing proposed Coquitlam street name would be a step for reconciliation (Aug. 10, 2024)
There appears to be a lot of emotion surrounding Coquitlam council's deliberations regarding potentially renaming Coronation Crescent.
I can certainly see both sides of the argument, and respect people's opinions whether they are consistent with mine or not.
However, I must disagree with one part of Mary Joe's letter wherein she uses this issue to argue for the renaming of Mundy Park, one of the Tri-Cities' jewels.
She argues that the name Mundy Park is "highly offensive" because it was "named after British settler George Munday."
What makes that name so offensive?
Because Mr. Munday and his family immigrated to Canada from England in 1869 and then bought land, which subsequently was turned into a beautiful park?
I don't think it is fair to Mr. Munday's descendants, many of whom live in the area, to hear that the name Mundy Park is "highly offensive" simply because it has Anglo–Saxon roots.
So far as I can tell, there are no controversies around the Munday/Mundy name and I don't believe it is right to try to start one now.
