Letter: Cyclists should stop road-hogging, Coquitlam driver says

It is no wonder motorists get annoyed with cyclists when they ride side-by-side, the letter writer states.

The Editor:

Today, July 4, at noon, I was driving along the Barnet Highway and, when I came to the left-turn lane for Clarke Road, I saw two cyclists riding side-by-side waiting to turn onto Clarke.

They turned, but instead of riding single file, they continued to ride side-by-side — thus not allowing the car in front of me or anybody else to safely pass them.

The only time they drove single file was when the road got a little narrower, which allowed me and the car in front of me to pass them.

However, when we came to the Moody Street overpass, waiting for the light to change, they were right behind me and were once again riding side-by-side.

When they turned onto the overpass, they stayed riding side-by-side.

Now, there is no room for a car to pass them on that overpass, but I just thought about the cheek of them to continue the side-by-side riding.

Even on Murray Street, when they had to wait for the pedestrian-activated light for Rocky Point Park, I could see in my rear view mirror that they were still side-by-side.

It is no wonder motorists get annoyed with cyclists when they do this.

Cyclists and motorists need to share the road and be respectful of each other, but by doing the road hogging does not help the cyclists' cause.

So, to the cyclist in the light-turquoise top and your buddy wearing the one that looked like it had multi-coloured strips of duct tape on it, do better!

You don't own the road.
