Blackthorn returns to Coquitlam's Place des Arts for a Robbie Burns celebration.

The Celtic music band Blackthorn will be joined by the Highland dance company The Wee Drams this weekend in Coquitlam to honour the birthday of “Scotland’s Bard.”

The entertainment to celebrate Robbie Burns will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave.) starting at 7:30 p.m. and will include a piper.

The concert will feature musical and dance traditions from Scotland with a focus on Burns’ songs — from ballads to comedic tunes — and his poems, and jigs and reels.

Blackthorn is made up of Rosie Carver, a fiddler who is on faculty at the Maillardville venue; her partner Michael Viens, a guitarist who was raised in Maillardville; singer and flautist Michelle Carlisle; and Tim Renaud on bass, vocals, bodhran and cittern.

Tickets at $26 for adults and $21 for students are now on sale via Eventbrite.ca

Meanwhile, the City of Port Coquitlam will host a Robbie Burns Luncheon for seniors on Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (2150 Wilson Ave.). The event is full, but there is a wait list.

And the Port Coquitlam legion will have Robbie Burns bash on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. You can call the branch at 604-942-8911 or email [email protected] for details.
