Three novels by U.S. author Colleen Hoover made the Top 10 list for the most checked-out books from the Coquitlam Public Library last year.
Hoover’s novels It Ends with Us (2016) and It Starts with Us (2022) from her It Ends with Us series, as well as Never Never (2015, digital), a three-part novella series with Tarryn Fisher that became a physical work in 2023, were popular page-turners last year.
Based on her parents’ relationship, It Ends with Us looks at domestic violence and emotional abuse; a film adaptation came out in August starring Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni and Brandon Sklenar.
Hoover has sold more than 20 million books and, last year, Time magazine named her one of 100 most influential people in the world.
In the adult non-fiction category, publications by health expert Gabor Maté, actor Jennette McCurdy and singer–dancer Britney Spears dominated the field in Coquitlam.
Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me, became a No. 1 New York Times best-seller and was translated into 25 languages, with actor Michelle Williams narrating the audiobook; a film adaption directed by Jon M. Chu is in the works.
As for young adult novels, books by Suzanne Collins, Rick Riordan and Leigh Bardugo took the lead while Diary of a Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney took all 10 spots for the most check-out publications at Coquitlam’s two branches: City Centre and Poirier.
In Port Coquitlam
Meanwhile, in the Fraser Valley Regional Library, a network that has Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Library, the most borrowed books for adults included John Grisham’s Camino Ghosts and The Women by Kristin Hannah — the latter telling the tale of a 20-year-old nursing student from the U.S. who joins the Army Nurse Corps in 1965 and is sent to Vietnam.
As for the most popular young adult books in 2024, the Fraser Valley Regional Library listed The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, the Percy Jackson publications by Rick Riordan and Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson, which focuses on the disappearance of the protagonist’s mother 16 years ago.
