Special Olympians in the Tri-Cities are standing a little taller after competing at the 2020 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games that wrapped up in Thunder Bay, Ont., last Saturday.
Or maybe they’re hunched over from all the medals they’ve got hanging around their necks.
Lindsey Aarstad, of Coquitlam, won two golds and a silver in snowshoeing events, while teammate Ariel Taylor, also of Coquitlam, won gold, silver and bronze medals in snowshoeing. Coquitlam’s Katie Little won two silver medals and Kyle McLaughlin, of Coquitlam, won silver and bronze medals, as did Port Moody’s Jay Prentice.
On the speed skating track, Port Moody’s Reid Demelo and Eric Bruneau, of Coquitlam, each glided home with a gold and three bronze medals, while Coquitlam’s Rene Girard climbed to the top of the podium in one event. Frankie Fu, of Port Coquitlam, skated away with two silvers and a bronze, and Coquitlam’s Nicholas Libera earned three silver medals.
Port Moody’s Fiona Hall won bronze medals in advanced giant slalom and advanced slalom.
The games featured 1,200 athletes, coaches, managers and staff competing in eight events, from alpine skiing to five-pin bowling, figure skating and floor hockey.
