The Coquitlam Express wasted little time filling a hole in the team’s goaltending corps after the departure of rookie Eric Young to the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League.
The BC Hockey League team announced Thursday, Jan. 30, it has acquired 18-year-old Logan Kennedy from the Sherwood Park Crusaders in exchange for future considerations.
Kennedy, who’s originally from Toronto, has six wins and two losses in the eight games he played for the Crusaders. He allowed an average of 3.88 goals against in those appearances and his save percentage is .892. He joins 20-year-old Andrew Ness whom the Express acquired from the Penticton Vees earlier this season.
Coquitlam general manager Tali Campbell said Kennedy is expected to be available for the team's game Saturday against the Powell River Kings, 7 p.m. at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.
Young signed with the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs, the latest of several players who’ve left BCHL teams to play in the Canadian Hockey League since the NCAA voted last November to change its eligibility rules to allow CHL players to earn scholarships in Div 1 programs beginning Aug. 1, 2025.
Previously, players from the Western and Ontario hockey leagues as well as the QMJHL were considered professionals by the top collegiate circuit in the United States because of a stipend they receive to cover expenses. That often sent players looking to land a hockey scholarship to an NCAA program to second-tier junior leagues like the BCHL, Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) or the US Hockey League (USHL).
Young had 13 wins and eight losses, with a 3.32 goals against average and save percentage of .890 in the 25 games he played for the Express this season. He also had one shutout.
The 19-year-old was also part of the BCHL’s Top Prospects game during its All-Star weekend in Salmon Arm Jan. 17.
