These groups in Coquitlam will split $207K in Spirit grants

Find out which organizations will receive Spirit of Coquitlam grants tonight, Jan. 13.

A total of 22 groups based or working in Coquitlam will split $207,027 in Spirit grants from the city.

Tonight, Jan. 13, city council is expected to OK the money to the organizations for their capital projects, community support, festivals and events, sport hosting and sporting equipment as part of the program’s 2024 fall intake.

Funding for the grants comes from the Great Canadian Casino Vancouver, which has a deal with the municipality to host the gambling venue on United Boulevard in Coquitlam.

Since 2002, the city has doled out Spirit grants to more than 250 groups.

Here are the most recent allocations, as proposed in the report to council (in no particular order):

  • Washington Kids Foundation = $25,000
    • accessibility upgrades to their new youth programming facility at 2700 Barnet Hwy.
  • Cornerstone SDA Church = $8,533
    • a food hamper program for new Farsi-speaking immigrants
  • Garden of Compassion = $9,500
    • a series of four information sessions for Korean-speaking seniors
  • Port Moody Curling Club = $1,799
    • 2025 Elmer Woods Memorial Bonspiel
  • Scouts Francophones de Maillardville = $10,000
    • public event celebrating the 70th anniversary of French Scouting
  • Progressive Housing Society = $10,000
    • a drop-in space for the under-housed or unsheltered to provide access to essential services
  • Blackout Art Society = $15,000
    • The Frontliners Play Series
  • Coquitlam Skating Club = $15,000
    • 2025 ice show
  • Diwali Celebration Society = $12,148
    • Colour Fest 2025
  • Evening Optimist Club of Coquitlam = $900
    • 2024 Youth Free Skate
  • Fraser Pacific Rose Society = $1,935
    • 2025 Rose Show
  • Huaren Choir of Vancouver Society = $4,000
    • 2024 annual concert
  • Oakdale Neighbourhood Association = $3,240
    • 2025 Oakdale Neighbourhood Day
  • Tri-Cities Pride Society = $14,000
    • 2025 Coquitlam Pride Festival
  • Tri-City Chinese Community Society = $11,619
    • Spring Fair Festival
  • Vancouver International Youth Film Festival = $15,000
    • 8th annual festival
  • Coquitlam Lions Water Polo Association = $5,131
    • 2025 Ethan Denum Memorial Water Polo Tournament
  • Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association = $25,000
    • Female Adanac Challenge and the Trevor Wingrove Memorial tournaments
  • Coquitlam–Moody Ringette Association = $2,780
    • 2025 Ringette BC Zone and 18+ Provincial Championships
  • Pacific Storm Water Polo Club = $10,101
    • 2025 Tournament of Courage
  • Aquasonics Artistic Swimming Club = $1,350
    • updated sound system and training weights
  • Coquitlam Minor Football Association = $5,000
    • new shoulder pad safety gear
