Port Moody firefighters will be chipping Christmas trees on Jan. 4 and 5 at Inlet Centre fire hall. it's one of several such events across the Tri-Cities that weekend.

If the Christmas cheer is starting to wear off your natural tree, there’s plenty of opportunities in the Tri-Cities this coming weekend to give it a new life as chips for local parks and trails.

There will be tree-chipping events Jan. 4 and 5 in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

Coquitlam, in fact, will have three events with donations supporting local community groups:

  • The Friends of Mundy Park Heritage Society will be chipping trees at the park’s Hillcrest parking lot (641 Hillcrest St.) on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The Kinsmen Club of Coquitlam will have its chipper set up in Lot A at Town Centre Park on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Scouts Francophone de Maillardville will accept trees for chipping at the Canadian Tire parking lot (1200 Seguin Dr.) on Saturday, Jan 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Trees can also be cut into one-metre lengths and branches trimmed to less than 10 cm in diameter to be deposited into green carts for regular curbside pickup as long as the cart’s lid closes completely.

As well, trees can be dropped off for free by Coquitlam residents with proof of their address at the United Boulevard recycling and waste centre (995 United Blvd.)

Port Coquitlam’s tree chipping event takes place Jan. 4 and 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fire Hall #1 (1725 Broadway St.).

The minimum $10 donation supports the Port Coquitlam Firefighters Charitable Society and other recyclable items like lights, batteries, styrofoam, cardboard, soft plastics, small appliances and electronics can also be dropped off at the same time.

For a minimum $20 donation, residents can also have their tree picked up curbside by firefighters. Just fill out the online form by 12 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, or call 604-927-5375.

As well, trees can be cut into small pieces no longer than 40 inches and three inches in diameter to fit into a green cart with the lid able to close for regular scheduled collection by the city’s recycling truck.

Port Moody firefighters will be holding their annual drive-through tree chipping event at the Inlet Central fire hall (150 Newport Dr.) Jan. 4 and 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They’ll also hose down the needles off your car.

Donations go to the BC Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund.

Pick-up of trees can also be arranged by emailing [email protected].

In all instances, trees should be removed from their stand and stripped of any lights, decorations, tinsel or flocking.
