'Tearin' Up My Heart': Boy band parody is back in Port Moody

The Comedy Department pays homage to boy bands like NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and One Direction in parody playing out in Port Moody on Feb. 7, 2025. The city is the second stop on their B.C. and Alberta tour.

A music parody and comedy show that sold out a month before it was mounted at Port Moody’s Inlet Theatre last year is back for another run.

And tickets to see Middle Aged Boy Band on Feb. 7, 2025, are nearly gone, said Denise Jones, co-founder of The Comedy Department who is performing in the touring production that starts Friday, Jan. 31 in Delta.

Jones and her husband Michael Teigen, who was raised in Coquitlam, are cast in the B.C. and Albertan tour along with company co-founder David Milchard and fellow improvisers Ken Lawson and Allen Morrison.

Described as “99 per cent comedy,” the show features hits from such boy bands as NSYNC, New Kids On The Block and One Direction.

“We pay homage to all the main boy bands,” Jones told the Tri-City News Jan. 21, noting Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” is a highly popular set.

Jones said the troupe typically sees moms and daughters in the crowd.

“The idea of people coming back to something that’s normally relegated to the youth is something so funny to me,” she said. “And what’s best is that all those bands are touring again.”

Jones, who won’t be appearing in the Port Moody show, said she didn’t fully understand the impact of the boy band power until last year’s gig at the Inlet Theatre: Before the event, ticket-holders were singing to boy band songs, knowing every lyric, and having a great time with family and friends.

“These people went back to a time in their lives when things were just simpler […] It was wonderful to get that feeling when we came out.”

Jones said she remembers attending concerts as a young woman and making eye contact with a band member. In Middle Age Boy Band, she sports fake chest hair and pretends to be a dude “and I get to be on stage and make that prolonged eye contact with the audience to return that special moment. It’s fun.”

And she said while the show does have some saucy scenes with adult language — and a cash bar — it’s open to comedy lovers as young as 14 years old.

Jones said The Comedy Department likes playing in Port Moody because “it’s been so kind to us”; more Department events are booked later this year in the city.

For tickets to see The Comedy Department’s Middle Aged Boy Band on Friday, Feb. 7 at the Inlet Theatre (inside Port Moody City Hall, 100 Newport Dr.), visit Eventbrite.ca or the company’s website for details.
