With kids now back in school, an entertainment company is giving parents a breather this month from the activity rush.
Jokers Canada is back in the Tri-Cities with three stand-up comedy shows aimed to give adults a break from the whirlwind.
On Sept. 20, 21 and 28, comedians will be in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody, respectively, to bring a bit of levity to parents’ lives as the academic year begins for their children.
“After the summer, it’s good for people to have a night out and laugh — without the kids,” said Jokers Canada founder and comedian Aaron Arya, noting the fresh line-ups and returning favourites at each locale.
Among those on the Evergreen Cultural Centre stage in Coquitlam will be Jacob Samuel, who won the 2021 JUNO Award for his debut album Horse Power and has appeared on The Comedy Network, CBC Gem and Crave; he can also be heard on Sirius XM and CBC’s The Debaters.
“I love working with Jokers Canada,” he said.
“They have great lineups and bring out the best audiences in the Lower Mainland.”
For the Port Coquitlam performance at the Terry Fox Theatre, Chris Griffin, a touring pro comedian who can be heard on Sirius XM, will emcee.
He told the Tri-City News he’s excited for the gig as he doesn’t usually host comedy shows these days, “but I’m always pumped to dust off my hosting boots for the Comedy Classics because Jokers showcases the absolute best talent Western Canada has to offer.”
And rising star Niki Mohrdar, who was featured on the 2024 Just for Laughs Originals album, added she’s eager to return to Port Moody.
“Jokers Canada has really given me a chance to grow into myself as a comedian,” Mohrdar said.
“Aaron has always believed in me and given me opportunities to perform in venues I would never have been able to this early in my career. I’m only three years in, so being able to perform in sold-out theatres across the province is a privilege, and it’s only made me a better comedian.”
Arya said it’ll be the last Jokers Canada shows of the year for Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam; however, the company will be back in Port Moody on Nov. 30 for its 2024 farewell date.
More Tri-City gigs are planned for the new year, Arya said.
