If you go down to Port Coquitlam’s Lions Park on Aug. 24, you’re sure in for a big surprise.

That’s when the city’s artist in residence, Nickie Lewis, will unveil her “Mix and Match Creatures,” a series of organic eco-sculptures she constructs with sticks, moss and other plants.

The whimsical creations are inspired by shapes and forms in nature. But they also convey a serious message, helping to educate people about environmental impacts and encourage sustainable practices.

Visitors to the unveiling, that runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be able to interact with the hybrid creatures and even dress them up with handmade accessories.

Lewis will also conduct a workshop to teach participants how to create woven hearts with sticks and twine.

Lewis embarked on her sculpting journey in nature during the COVID-19 pandemic when she wove a giant dragon, sleeping fairy, a non-binary unicorn and other mythological and fictional characters at Robert Burnaby Park in Burnaby.

Through the spring and summer, Lewis has conducted several workshops to solicit creature ideas from children, teach them how to collect materials and build with them.

Registration for the unveiling event is encouraged. Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
