Speedster clocks 111 km/h in 60 zone of Port Coquitlam's Mary Hill Bypass

It happened in the same spot where Coquitlam RCMP were conducting high accident zone enforcement, and the public can expect more radar in the area.

A driver was caught speeding at 111 km/h in a 60 zone along the Mary Hill Bypass in Port Coquitlam on June 25, 2023.

Here's an extra heads up for those that need or may soon travel along the Mary Hill Bypass (7B): expect traffic cops.

RCMP is warning the public once more that its high accident zone enforcement (HAZE) team will be stationed along the Port Coquitlam highway at various dates and times over the next month.

This after one excessive speedster was recently caught at nearly double the limit on the east side of the bypass where officers were continuing their summer-long initiative.

The driver of a blue-green four-door sedan clocked 111 km/h while heading westbound through the 60 zone near the intersection of 7B and Coast Meridian Road.

Mounties spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins explained the incident took place at 9 a.m. on Sunday (June 25), to which the vehicle was impounded for seven days and the motorist was handed over a violation ticket.

The exact total was not provided to the Tri-City News, but ICBC states the fine for excessive speeding can range from $368 to $483, plus three points against a license.

"This area [Mary Hill Bypass] is included in the HAZE initiative because it statistically shows a large number of collisions with significant damage and injuries," Coquitlam RCMP said in a social media post about the speedster.

In fact, according to new stats from ICBC, there were 62 known motor vehicle collisions at the Mary Hill Bypass and Coast Meridian Road the last five years, including 11 in 2022.

There were 395 crashes along the entire 7B stretch last year, which included property damage, injury or death.

Meanwhile, Coquitlam Mounties have written up 890 violation tickets to commuters for various offences along the Mary Hill Bypass between Jan. 1 and May 21 this year.
