See demos, dance to K-Pop and tour Tri-City galleries during Culture Days

There are plenty of free events and activities happening in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody during Culture Days 2024, an annual movement promoting the arts in Canadian communities.

A national movement to celebrate the arts and culture is now in full swing.

And the Tri-Cities has a number of free events, presentations, activities and workshops happening for Culture Days 2024, which wraps up across Canada on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Here’s what’s on in the region (RSVP may be required, so check with the facility or organizer before attending or visit the Culture Days website):

Coquitlam

  • When: Thursday, Sept. 26, 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Where: Town Centre Park Community Centre (1207 Pinetree Way)
  • What: Artist Jennifer Peng will demonstrate her skills as part of the city’s new visual art exhibition at Town Centre Park Community Centre and Maillardville Community Centre.

 

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 28, 11 a.m. to noon
  • Where: Mackin House (1116 Brunette Ave.)
  • What: Explore the roots of K-Pop with the Coquitlam Heritage Society and hear the DJ spins from KTV Media Production.

 

  • When: Friday, Oct. 4, 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.
  • Where: Art Gallery at Evergreen (1205 Pinetree Way)
  • What: Hear the AGE curator talk about the latest show, Cindy Mochizuki: stories best told at twilight, during a lunchtime tour.

 

  • When: Friday, Oct. 4, 4 to 9 p.m.
  • Where: Mackin House Museum (1116 Brunette Ave.)
  • What: Learn about the use of zines throughout LGBTQ+ history and activism, and make your own. All materials and instructions will be provided; however, you can bring your own images to use as well.

 

  • When: Sunday, Oct. 6, 1 to 3 p.m.
  • Where: Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave.)
  • What: Get inspired by the exhibits and create your own masterpiece during Family Day @ PdA.

 

  • When: Wednesday, Oct. 9, 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Where: Town Centre Park Community Centre (1207 Pinetree Way)
  • What: Artist Rose Kapp will demonstrate her skills as part of the city’s new visual art exhibition at Town Centre Park Community Centre and Maillardville Community Centre.

 

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 12, 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Town Centre Park Community Centre (1207 Pinetree Way)
  • What: Artist Baran Sabahi will demonstrate their skills as part of the city’s new visual art exhibition at Town Centre Park Community Centre and Maillardville Community Centre.

 

  • When: Sunday, Oct. 13, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Where: Coquitlam Farmers Market (1655 Winslow Ave.)
  • What: Youth ages five to 18 will show their photography at the Coquitlam Farmers Market as part of the Grow Local Society’s Young Shoots display. Submissions are due by Oct. 6 by emailing [email protected] or bring a printed 8x10 image to the Coquitlam or Port Coquitlam farmers markets before Oct. 6.

 

Port Coquitlam

  • When: Wednesday, Sept. 25, 7 to 9 p.m.
  • Where: The Outlet at Leigh Square (2248 McAllister Ave.)
  • What: Art Focus Artists Association hosts a demo by artist Dale Bhyre, who is a member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists and a senior member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

 

  • When: Friday, Sept. 27, 7 to 9 p.m.
  • Where: JB Young Room at Port Coquitlam Community Centre (2150 Wilson Ave.)
  • What: Join artist Tamara Grand for a mixed media concertina sketchbook workshop. Participants will explore colour, texture and shape using mark-making, paint, and collage.

 

  • When: Tuesday, Oct. 8, 11 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Where: Terry Fox Library (2150 Wilson Ave.)
  • What: Librarians will host a special story time for children during Culture Days.

 

  • When: Thursday, Oct. 10, 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Where: Michael Wright Art Gallery, Gathering Place (200-2253 Leigh Sq.)
  • What: Be part of the opening reception three exhibitions: The Power of Surrender by Kelsy Schumacher; Celebration by the pottery collective Clay For You; and Urbanscapes: Snippets of Metro Vancouver by Dilys Huang.

 

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 12, 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Michael Wright Art Gallery, Gathering Place (200-2253 Leigh Sq.)
  • What: Learn about the art of macramé with Kelsy Schumacher and create a fibre art wall hanging to take home. Call 604-927-7529 to register.

 

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 12, noon to 4 p.m.
  • Where: The Outlet, artist in residence studio (110-2248 McAllister Ave.)
  • What: Meet the City of Port Coquitlam’s new artist in residence, Keely O’Brien, and her project about homes woven into family histories.

 

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 12, 2 to 5 p.m.
  • Where: The Outlet workroom (110-2248 McAllister Ave.)
  • What: Clay For You, a Korean pottery collective, will show how it creates traditional Korean carving techniques and wheel throwing. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

 

  • When: Anytime
  • Where: Donald Pathway in downtown Port Coquitlam
  • What: Read the new Tiny Love Stories along the Donald Pathway from Mithila Karnik, Denise Chau, Elissa Cook, Carolina Chavarriaga, Jennifer Pownall, Kateryna Shumovska, Ashleigh and Hailey Waters, and Allison Fontana. The images were illustrated by Kari Rust.

 

Port Moody

  • When: Anytime
  • Where: POMO Museum (2734 Murray St.)
  • What: Learn about the history of toys, and check out the Port Moody-inspired Lego display that includes Rocky Point Park and Brewers Row. The exhibit is open until Oct. 26, 2024.

 

  • When: Saturday, Oct. 5, 2 to 2:30 p.m.
  • Where: PoMoArts (2425 St. Johns St.)
  • What: Hear from artist Allison Chow, who will read from My Mother’s Daughter and talk about the inspiration, techniques and stories behind Echoes of Home.

 

  • When: Anytime
  • Where: PoMoArts (2425 St. Johns St.)
  • What: Tour the art galleries to see the annual Art 4 Life exhibition, which ends Oct. 28, 2024.
