Three churches in the Tri-Cities will step up to provide overnight shelter to unhoused people this fall and winter.
St. Laurence Anglican Church in Coquitlam, Coquitlam Alliance Church and Port Coquitlam’s Trinity United Church will offer space to the homeless in December, January and February.
Funded by BC Housing, the temporary cold/wet weather mat program will be operated by the Progressive Housing Society.
Still, no new site has been confirmed to replace the Kyle Centre in Port Moody for the Extreme Winter Response shelter.
“Port Moody has indicated that the Kyle Centre will not be available, and therefore the City [of Coquitlam], its partners and the Tri-Cities Housing and Homelessness Task Group are continuing to work with BC Housing to find a location,” Renée de St. Croix, Coquitlam’s director of urban planning and design, told the Tri-City News.
In March, BC Housing relocated about 10 people temporarily living in shelter spaces at the former SureStay Hotel on Brunette Avenue.
That location was opened during the COVID-19 pandemic as a short-term measure and run by the Phoenix Drug and Alcohol Recovery Society.
RainCity Housing also runs a shelter at 3030 Gordon Ave., in Coquitlam, which now has an encampment around it.
