Port Moody church asks for food, cash for returning SFU students

The Inlet United Church in Port Moody is calling for contributions of non-perishable food and cash to be dropped off before Sunday, Dec. 31, as part of its Advent Project.

As the price of housing and food rises, a Port Moody church is asking for donations to help undergraduates at Simon Fraser University (SFU) as they return to campus next month.

The Rev. Jennifer Swanson of Inlet United Church, located at 2315 Spring St., is calling for contributions of non-perishable food and cash to be dropped off before New Year's Eve Sunday, Dec. 31.

The Advent Project is a partnership between the Port Moody church and the United Church Campus Ministry at SFU, which runs an on-campus food bank on Burnaby Mountain for post-secondary students in financial need.

As many students have limited kitchen access where they live, the "most useful non-perishable items are ones that can be eaten as-is or prepared using only a microwave oven or kettle," said Rev. Swanson in a news release.

The Port Moody church is asking for non-perishable goods to be dropped off in its foyer during regular office hours — Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — or during worship services on Sundays.

Alternatively, you can e-transfer money to the church to buy fresh food on SFU’s food bank days by emailing [email protected] (type "Advent Project" in the subject line).
