Port Coquitlam to start flushing water mains today

Although the tap water may look, smell and taste different, it’s still safe to drink, the City of Port Coquitlam says.

The tap water in Port Coquitlam homes and businesses may be cloudy for a short time over the next three months.

Starting today, Family Day, Feb. 19, and as part of its annual maintenance program, the city will be flushing its water mains in the following zones:

  • south of Lougheed Highway to Argue Street
  • west of Broadway Street to Westwood Street

The aim of the flush is to improve the water quality by sweeping out the sediment that builds up in the pipe.

The city advises that when crews are flushing in a neighbourhood, residents and business owners should stop using their hot water to ensure the sediment doesn’t get drawn into their hot water tanks.

And although the tap water may look, smell and taste different, it’s still safe to drink; however, don’t run the laundry machine while the work is being done.

To clear the tap water after the pipes are flushed, PoCo residents and business owners can run the indoor cold water tap for about 30 minutes. It can take up to two hours for the water to be clear again.

The city flushing will happen from Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., for 12 weeks.

The PoCo program comes as the City of Coquitlam is also flushing its water mains.
