Three Tri-City actors are cast in an award-winning murder–mystery play that runs next month in Langley.
Coquitlam’s Dovreshin MacRae takes on the role of Felix while Joanne Giampa and Ryan Johnson of Port Coquitlam portray Martha and William Gillette in The Game’s Afoot, a show by Ken Ludwig that clinched the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Allen Poe Award in 2012.
The story follows the character William Gillette in December 1936 after he played the starring role in the production Sherlock Holmes. For the weekend, Gillette has invited the cast members to his Connecticut castle; however, the party stops when someone is murdered.
Transforming into his acting persona as a sleuth, Gillette tries to track down the killer.
Reg Parks, artistic director of Theatre in the Country (TIC), which is staging The Game’s Afoot from Sept. 11 to 28, said Gillette was a real person who got permission from the author of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, to write and produce his own Sherlock Holmes-style play.
And, with the proceeds, the actor, director and playwright built a Medieval-style castle in Connecticut in 1914 called Gillette Castle. Today, the landmark draws about 300,000 tourists a year.
"We're excited to offer this cleverly written and highly entertaining show to our community," Parks said in a news release. "Our cast and crew have worked incredibly hard to bring this fast paced story to life with all of its unique twists and turns, and we can't wait to share it with our audience."
For tickets to see The Game’s Afoot on the TIC stage (5708 Glover Rd., Langley), you can visit the company website or call the box office at 604-259-9737. Tickets are available with a three-course dinner at 6:30 p.m., or for the show alone at 7 p.m.
