A slight-of-hand suspect is sought by Coquitlam Mounties after they stole an apparent gold necklace right off a man's neck.

The incident took place on Sunday (Jan. 22) around 10:45 a.m. near the intersection of Glen Drive and Pacific Street, RCMP confirm, one block north of Coquitlam Centre.

The suspect is said to have approached a man and gave a trinket necklace in allegedly wishing him a happy Lunar New Year.

They put the necklace around his neck as part of the exchange.

However, it wasn't until after the suspect left that the man realized the gold necklace he was already wearing was taken.

"I have spoken to our crime analysts and we have not seen this as recent trend or increase," said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins when asked by the Tri-City News if the detachment has heard of other recent cases.

Anyone with more information about the incident, or if you believe you're a victim of theft, is encouraged to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 or quote file-number 2023-2018.
