Residents of the Tri-Cities won’t have to travel far to remember the sacrifices made by Canada’s war heroes on Monday, Nov. 11.
Each community is planning public Remembrance Day ceremonies. Here is a guide to each:
Port Coquitlam
The largest of the Remembrance Day ceremonies occurs at the newly-refurbished Veterans Park in downtown Port Coquitlam.
The event begins at 10:10 a.m. with a parade that proceeds along Shaughnessy Street from Wilson Avenue to McAllister Avenue. It will be followed by a wreath-laying service at the cenotaph at Veterans Park at 10:45 a.m.
To accommodate the parade and ceremonies, several road closure will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.:
- Shaughnessy Street, from Wilson Avenue to Elgin Avenue
- Leigh Square Place, east of Shaughnessy Street
- Donald Street, from Wilson Avenue to McAllister Avenue
- Whyte Avenue at Shaughnessy Street
- McAllister Avenue east of Shaughnessy Street to Mary Hill Road
- McAllister Avenue west of Shaughnessy Street to the southbound alleyway
There are several public parking areas in the city’s downtown area.
Coquitlam
Coquitlam Legion Branch 263 will host its traditional Remembrance Day parade and ceremony at Blue Mountain Park.
The parade begins at approximately 10:15 a.m. at Como Lake Middle School (1121 King Albert St.) and proceeds along King Albert Avenue to the cenotaph at Blue Mountain Park where ceremonies will commence at about 10:30 a.m.
There’s also still opportunities to paint poppies on the grass along Veterans Way at Blue Mountain Park.
Volunteers from Coquitlam’s Park Spark program will be on hand with supplies and instructions on:
- Friday, Nov. 8, from 3 to 5 p.m.
- Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
You can also write a message of remembrance and affix it to a tree along Veteran’s Way. They will be kept in place until Nov. 18 after which they’ll be transcribed and forwarded to veteran groups.
You can also submit your message by email to have it put onto a ribbon and tied to a tree for you.
Port Moody
Port Moody’s Remembrance Day ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. with an interdenominational faith service at the city’s Legion Branch 119 (2529 Clarke St.).
The parade march begins at 10:35 a.m. following a route south on Kyle Street, east on St. Johns Street, north on Grant Street and then west along Clarke Street, concluding at the Legion, where a ceremony will be held followed by a wreath laying at the cenotaph on Spring Street.
Several roads will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until noon to accommodate the morning’s events. They are:
- Clarke Street from Moody Street to Elgin Street
- Spring Street from Grant Street to Kyle Street
- Kyle Street from Clarke Street to St. Johns Street
- Mary Street from Clarke Street to St. Johns Street
- Grant Street from Clarke Street to St. Johns Street
St. Johns Street will be closed from 10 - 11 a.m. for the parade.
Anmore/Belcarra
The villages of Anmore and Belcarra will mark the solemn remembrance of wars past with a special sail past by members of the Port Moody Power and Sail Squadron at təmtəmíxʷtən/Belcarra Regional Park (2375 Bedwell Bay Rd.) beginning at 10:30 a.m. The main viewing area will be from the pier.
The event is followed by a lunch and refreshments, by donation, at the picnic shelters.
