Brotherhood, directed by Port Coquitlam's Richard Bell, is based on the 1926 tragedy when 11 young boys died after a canoe capsized on an Ontario lake.

A Port Coquitlam filmmaker’s cinematic story of sacrifice and camaraderie will be screened for free at Vancouver’s Dunbar Theatre (4555 Dunbar St.) on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Richard Bell, who graduated from Terry Fox Secondary and learned his filmmaking craft at Langara College’s Studio 58, said the timing of the free screening for his 2019 film, Brotherhood, is an appropriate reminder of the sacrifices made by young soldiers that will be memorialized two days later, on Remembrance Day.

Bell said the story, set in 1926, recounts the harrowing struggle for survival of a group of 15 young men from a leadership camp after their canoe capsizes on an Ontario lake.

He said their ill-fated journey evokes timeless themes of bravery and hope and is “a testament to the courage and loss that defined a generation.”

Though 11 of the boys perished, Bell said, “Brotherhood is ultimately a story of resilience and hope, qualities that resonate strongly with Remembrance Day.”

The film was awarded a Canadian Screen Achievement Award for visual effects in 2020.

It was also nominated for best original song for “I’ve Got a Big One,” that was written by Bell along with the late conductor of the Vancouver Symophony Orchestra, Bramwell Tovey.

Since its release, Brotherhood has been screened at more than 65 theatres and it was also shown nationally on the Super Channel Entertainment Network (SCEN).

Bell has also made two other films; Two Brothers and Two Others was released in 2001, along with Eighteen, from 2005.

Saturday’s screening begins at 1 p.m. and tickets can be secured online.
