Three food trucks jumped at the chance to participate in Port Coquitlam's new food truck initiative.
The inaugural businesses attending Lions Park (2300 Lions Way) this weekend are as follows:
- Beaver Tails — Friday and Saturday (July 28-29)
- KYU Grill — Saturday (July 29)
- Namaste Food Lovers — Sunday (July 30)
Vendors will choose their own operating hours between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. daily.
And, if successful, the city will consider expanding on the scheduled days of the new program, which is set to continue until Sept. 30.
Lions Park was chosen as the food truck stop given its popularity with local residents and visitors, as well as its picnic facilities and washrooms.
A designated location for one food truck will operate in the parking lot, PoCo staff explained, ensuring a flat, hard surface for a truck to park, provides good visibility, safe access for customers and limits impact to park users.
How it works
Any food truck or cart operator that meets the base requirements are invited to apply for desired dates over the summer; the space will generally be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis, with some consideration given to ensuring a mix of food options.
Special Event Business Licenses are available to all food truck vendors including out of town businesses for the day for $25.
The project is intended to support opportunities for food trucks with:
- A streamlined and simplified application process;
- A designated location for a food truck
- A continuous intake of applications
In keeping with current requirements for food trucks operating at special events, all food trucks will be required to meet the following requirements:
- Health approval (Fraser Health, Coastal Health etc)
- Greater Vancouver Fire Chief’s Association (GVFCA) inspection decal
- Automotive Liability insurance with minimum $5 million liability with an ICBC Confirmation of Automobile Insurance Coverage.
Food trucks operating in Lions Park will be required to have $5-million liability insurance naming the city as additional insured party.
