Summer and carnivals go together like peanut butter and jam.
And a beloved event of its kind in Port Coquitlam is returning this week that's also acting as a fundraiser for disease research.
The Astoria Retirement Residences' annual summer carnival is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon (July 27), marking its second gathering since the COVID-19 pandemic, which cancelled the 2020 and 2021 events.
In 2022, a total of $1,500 in proceeds and donations from the carnival went to the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal in support of those that fled the war-torn eastern European nation.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation will be this year's recipient, adding to the $1.6 billion raised to the Canadian non-profit since its inception in 1952.
According to the most recent national data, roughly 2.4 million adults in the country above 20 years old live with some form of heart disease
Astoria will feature carnival games with lots of prizes up for grabs, live music food vendors, a 50/50 draw and a dunk tank.
Patrons can also get their face painted or have a balloon animal made for them by donation only.
As well, a llama will be on site for anyone to view and pet.
The Astoria summer carnival is set for Thursday (July 27) from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Donald Walkway — located next to the main building (2245 Kelly Ave.).
Tickets to participate are $2 each.
Port Coquitlam Coun. Paige Petriw will also be on hand to deliver the first pitch to the dunk tank.
