Coquitlam RCMP will be out in force at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.) next Friday, July 19.

But there’s no risk to public safety.

The detachment is holding its annual Show ’n Shine event that is the culmination of the Junior Mountie policy academy.

Police cruisers, motorcycles and a boat will be on display, along with a truck from the Coquitlam Fire & Rescue.

Representatives from other first responders, like Coquitlam Search and Rescue, the city’s bylaw enforcement team, BC Ambulance Service, BC Sheriff Service, BC Conservation Officer Service, the RCMP bomb squad, rural policing and the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services will also be on hand to chat, answer questions and even show a little of what they do.

The free event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The junior police academy runs from July 15 to July 19.

It gives kids aged 10 to 14 from the Tri-Cities and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation a hands-on introduction to police work.

During the five half-day sessions they’ll do physical training including an obstacle course, to march and do drills under the command of an RCMP drill sergeant and learn how to do routine police work like fingerprinting, accident investigation and conducting a traffic stop.

All the participants will be honoured at a red serge graduation ceremony on the Friday evening.
