Coquitlam RCMP has a new police chief.
Tonight, May 13, Darren Carr — the detachment’s acting officer in charge — will be formally introduced to Coquitlam city council as the next supervisor for Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Anmore, Belcarra and the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation.
He replaces Keith Bramhill, who stepped down in February to take a job at E-Division, B.C.’s RCMP headquarters.
Supt. Carr, who officially began his new role on May 8, started with the RCMP 24 years ago and, since then, has worked around the Lower Mainland in operational and administrative roles.
He was awarded the commanding officer’s commendation for bravery and the commissioner’s commendation for outstanding service and, from the provincial government, valour and meritorious service accolades.
In 2020, he landed at the Coquitlam detachment to manage general duty, and traffic and investigative services.
As the acting OIC, Carr stated, “My vision is to continue to focus on our strategic priorities, which are to reduce crime, to partner with our diverse communities, to support our people and to enhance public safety. As your police service we will be transparent, accountable, inclusive and accessible."
He added, "We will also be adaptive to the changing needs and complexities of policing in addressing such challenges as the impacts of crime, mental health, addictions, homelessness and youth violence.”
Added the RCMP's Lower Mainland district commander and assistant commissioner Maureen Levy in a news release on May 14: "Darren’s experience and extensive knowledge will serve him well in this newly appointed role. His commitment to public safety and serving the community will continue to be an asset to Coquitlam RCMP."
