Children and youth can take a time out while at Coquitlam Centre to focus on their state of mind.

For the first time, the mall’s operators, Morguard, have created a program called CHECK-IN for its 18 shopping centres across Canada for young people to dial in on their mental health.

The initiative is a partnership with Kids Help Phone, the country’s only 24/7 e-mental health service for children that offers free and confidential support in many languages.

And until May 31, Morguard will donate $2 to the Kids Help Phone each time Coquitlam Centre visitors scan the QR code on the large iPhone sign in the Northeast Plaza, by H&M and Walmart.

Morguard has committed up to $50,000.

The CHECK-IN launch at the company's 18 properties comes during National Mental Health Awareness Month.

"Coquitlam Centre is thrilled to collaborate with Kids Help Phone to promote mental health as a priority," said marketing manager Megan Lee in a news release.

"This initiative serves as a great reminder that even simple gestures like checking in with family, friends, and yourself can make a big difference."

To reach the Kids Help Phone, text CONNECT to 686868. The Phone is a counselling, referral and support service for people under the age of 20.

Fraser Health Authority also provides mental health resources for children and youth through its website.
