Want a career in the arts?

Tri-City Grade 11 and 12 students wanting a career in digital media, film production and visual arts can hear about what programs are available at the first-ever School District 43 gathering for post-secondary art institutions.

Tri-City Grade 11 and 12 students wanting a career in digital media, film production and visual arts can hear about what programs are available at the first-ever School District 43 gathering for post-secondary art institutions.

The event, being held next Wednesday at Coquitlam's Gleneagle secondary school, is being organized by Gleneagle teachers Mike McElgunn and Jodey Udell in an effort to bring post-secondary representatives to graduating students directly.

Reps will be on hand from;

Emily Carr University of Art and Design;

Capilano University;

Gulf Islands Film and TV School;

Kwantlen Polytechnic University;

Langara College;

UBC and SFU;

Vancouver Film School;

The Art Institute;

Vancouver Institute of Media Arts;

and Vancouver Animation School.

"Events like this are usually geared for academics, not specifically for the arts," said McElgunn, Gleneagle's fine arts department head, adding, "Now is the time for senior students to consider what opportunities are available and to get their portfolios ready Some schools are now accepting for early admissions."

McElgunn, an award-winning arts educator, said there are many post-secondary arts programs that are new or not well known. And he said Metro Vancouver has become a hub for people making a living in the arts, especially in the film and animation fields.

He said he's pleased with the number of institutions that have signed up to make presentations - so much so that he has extended invitations to attend to arts students in New Westminster, Burnaby and Maple Ridge.

SD43's post-secondary arts night is Wednesday, Nov. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Gleneagle secondary school (1195 Lansdowne Dr.). Participants can choose up to three sessions to attend at 7 , 7:45 and 8:30 p.m. For more information, email Mike McElgunn at [email protected].
