An interdisciplinary artist and performer who grew up in the Tri-Cities will stage his sci-fi thriller for screen and stage in Vancouver next month.
Conor Wylie will have his K Body and Mind show that he wrote, directed and produced at the 20th annual PuSh International Performing Arts Festival on Feb. 1 and 2 at the Scotiabank Dance Centre (677 Davie St.). It can also be viewed online Feb. 1 to 9.
Described as “a blend of cyberpunk anime with minimalist theatre,” K Body and Mind follows Kawabi, a cyborg security officer who works for a body-share startup called The Grove.
It’s being mounted by A Wake of Vultures, a collective that includes Wylie (theatre), Nancy Tam (music, sound design and theatre) and Daniel O’Shea (film and theatre) as part of a double bill called Seeing Double, with Walking at Night by Myself.
Running from Jan. 23 to Feb. 9, the PuSh festival includes more than two dozen works in dance, theatre, multimedia and music at Vancouver venues. There are 13 countries represented and it features three world premieres and eight Canadian debuts.
“The 2025 PuSh Festival is a celebration of audacious live art,” said Gabrielle Martin, PuSh’s director of programming, in a news release.
“In a world increasingly dominated by generative AI, they underscore live performance as a sanctuary of authenticity in an age that risks losing touch with the real.”
Wylie is a graduate of Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts and, in 2017, he won the Vancouver Mayor’s arts award for emerging theatre artist.
Two years later, he was picked as the Siminovitch Prize Protégé by his mentors James Long and Maiko Yamamoto.
And, in 2022, he was named best director of a Canadian feature by the Vancouver Asian Film Festival for K Body and Mind.
Tickets are $39 by visiting the PuSh website.
