SPOTLIGHT: Carney student headed to Miss Worlds

A Grade 12 student at Port Coquitlam's Archbishop Carney regional high school is the new Miss Teen Coquitlam World 2012. Katarina Lulic, 18, of Coquitlam, recently clinched the title after a provincial contest that qualified her to compete in the national Miss Teen Canada World pageant (www.missteencanadaworld.com) in Toronto next month. As part of her campaign, Lulic is raising funds for Free the Children Foundation.

Family and friends of Jean Baker helped the 80-year-old Port Moody resident to raise 130 pounds of food for the Share food bank during her birthday celebrations, which were held the same day as Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. Party guests were asked to bring a food or cash donation in lieu of a present.

Starr of Viva La Diva Hair Innovation got her scissors out for Ryan MacGregor, a Grade 4/5 teacher at Port Moody's Pleasantside elementary, which recently hosted a Haiti Hair Fest. Students raised more than $1,000 for Free the Children for Haiti.

Two Port Coquitlam students - one of them a young cancer survivor - laced up their runners on Sunday to take part in ChildRun. Josh Luteyn of Birchland elementary and Max Routelym of Blakeburn elementary, who licked the disease, joined in the 27th annual event through Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver and collected more than $5,000 for childhood cancer research. In total, 5,000 participants attended the fundraiser and brought in $1 million for BC Children's Hospital.

Students from Coquitlam's Hillcrest middle school took a walk through the woods last month to tidy up nearby Mundy Park. The effort was part of the second annual Spring Educational Program under the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up. The kids removed 10 kg of litter from around Mundy Lake - most of it food wrappers, cigarette butts and dog poop bags.

The founder president of a Port Coquitlam company specializing in underwater devices was recently awarded with a Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal. James McFarlane of International Submarine Engineering Ltd. (ISE) accepted the accolade from B.C.'s Lt.-Gen. Steven Point at a ceremony at HMCS Discovery in Vancouver in April. Started in 1974, ISE has delivered 240 vehicles and more than 400 robotic manipulators to some 200 countries.

Two students at Port Coquitlam's Riverside secondary scored high marks in a recent national history competition. Katrina Besler, Grade 11, and Sebastian Zein, Grade 12, placed in the top five percentile in the 19th annual Begbie Canadian History Contest in April. Riverside's Payman Baharmand, Jessica Arthur, Xavier Bryant and Anmari Bezuidenhout also took part.
