WRAP IT UP

To minimize odours in a green cart (Port Moody and Port Coquitlam) or a green can (Coquitlam), wrap food in newspaper or a paper towel and freeze it before dropping it in the can on garbage day and/or:

alternate layers of food scraps with layers of yard trimmings;

periodically rinse out the cart or can with a hose, detergent and a water/vinegar solution;

sprinkle a small amount of garden lime, baking soda or powdered laundry detergent (no bleach) in the cart;

LOCK IT UP

Secure garbage in a wildlife-resistant container, locked storage shed or (in Port Coquitlam) with a city-approved lock.

(In all three cities, carts must be left at the curb between 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. on collection days.)
