The official countdown to Lights at Lafarge, Metro Vancouver's largest free outdoor winter lights display, is on.
But before the magic starts on November 22, there are plenty of unique opportunities for all ages and abilities to get involved and help transform Coquitlam's Town Centre Park into a dazzling display for the winter season.
Community engagement is at the heart of Lights at Lafarge, where more than 1,200 volunteers behind the scenes and in the park help create an enchanting atmosphere that welcomes more than 500,000 visitors annually.
As a volunteer, you can actively contribute to the display and choose the areas of responsibilities you'd like to take on. Whether you want to help install lighting, design features or drop in for a workshop, there are endless opportunities to participate and have some fun. No experience necessary.
"We invite as many people as possible to get involved and show their love for the lights," says Sara Yastremski, City of Coquitlam's manager of parks services. "It’s a true community effort, and the more volunteers we have, the brighter our displays will shine."
Park Spark volunteer program
The Park Spark volunteer program launched in 2014 and offers community members the chance to get involved and make a positive impact on Coquitlam’s parks year-round. The program not only provides ongoing opportunities for residents to lend a hand in maintaining and improving local green spaces, but it also plays a key role in special events like Lights at Lafarge.
As part of this, the Light Brigade was introduced to focus specifically on transforming Town Centre Park into a dazzling seasonal lights display. Over the years, many Park Spark volunteers have joined the Light Brigade, eager to collaborate on new ideas that elevate the magic of the event and create an even more unforgettable experience for visitors.
"Some of our returning volunteers have been with us since the very first event, and it’s wonderful to see how regular Park Spark volunteers have also joined the Light Brigade," says Yastremski.
"What started as a simple opportunity has turned into something they look forward to all year round. The sense of civic pride and enthusiasm from the Coquitlam community is truly inspiring."
According to Yastremski, a great Park Spark Light Brigade volunteer brings a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and community pride, along with a willingness to get involved. Everyone can contribute in their own way and make a difference.
Park Spark recognizes their volunteers and celebrates their efforts throughout the display, not just at the end of the event. "While specific details are yet to come, we want to show our appreciation for all their hard work," reveals Yastremski.
Make friends, enjoy the outdoors, hone your skills
Volunteering with Park Spark is easy and offers a rewarding experience. You have an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people, earn volunteer hours, and feel proud of your contributions when you visit the lights.
"Many people have hidden talents that could really benefit the Park Spark Light Brigade," explains Yastremski. "Often, individuals don’t realize they’re artistic or that they can help wrap lights on features, but with guidance from fellow volunteers and staff, anything is possible."
"For those with more skills and ambition, we also have opportunities to help build features. There’s a spot for everyone on our team, whether you’re a beginner or have experience to share. Everyone has unique skills and interests they can contribute to make a difference."
Every year, volunteers can have a hand in helping add new or reimagined elements to the display. More than one million LED lights will be used, including multiple new installations for the public to explore.
"Don’t hesitate to join the Park Spark Light Brigade this year," encourages Yastremski.
"You can commit as much or as little time as you like. With over 1,200 volunteers already contributing, we’re looking for even more people to help make the Lights at Lafarge display bigger and better. It truly highlights the power of community collaboration."
