Dog walkers and hikers are urged to take extra caution when walking in Bert Flinn Park after two cougars were spotted last Friday.
Concern prompted the City of Port Moody to post a notice on its Facebook page.
According to the post, the BC Conservation Officer Service has received reports of an encounter with two cougars, an adult and a young cougar.
The alert comes two weeks after a cougar was videoed by surveillance camera walking along Leggett Drive in Anmore on Aug. 8.
Conservation officers at the time stated that cougars may make their way into urban communities as they look for deer or other small prey.
The following tips are provided to keep people safe.
• Keep dogs on a leash and under control at all times.
•- Be alert and make noise when walking in forested settings.
• If you do encounter a cougar, never run. Instead, turn and face the animal, use jackets and backpacks to look as big as possible, and back away slowly.
• If the cougar appears to be stalking or following you, yell and throw objects such as rocks or sticks.
• Report any encounters or sightings in an urban area to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
