A popular Asian grocer in the heart of Coquitlam is getting set to reintroduce temperature checks for shoppers next week to help reduce the chance someone will transmit the virus while browsing the vegetable aisle.
T&T Supermarket, which has a major location at Coquitlam Centre, announced in a written statement it would resume “inviting all customers and employees to take your temperature before entering the store.”
The new measures go into effect Monday, Sept. 14, and come as COVID-19 active caseloads continue to rise across British Columbia.
The grocery chain had originally suspended temperature checks June 9 after hot summer weather led to inaccurate readings as shoppers queued to enter the store.
“Now that the weather cooled down, we will be resuming voluntary customer temperature checks,” said CEO Tina Lee in a written statement.
The resumption in temperature checks comes as most students return to school across B.C. amid an uptick in cases.
On Wednesday, Sept. 9, the province announced a further 100 new cases over a 24-hour reporting period. That’s in addition to a Labour Day long weekend in which over 400 new cases were added to the provincial tally.
There are now 1,378 active cases across B.C., including 37 who have been hospitalized. Fraser Health, to which the Tri-Cities belong, has recorded the most confirmed cases of any health authority in the province, with 3,482 to date.
