Douglas men headed to hoops nationals

The Douglas College Royals men’s basketball team is headed to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championships.

The Douglas College Royals men’s basketball team is headed to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championships.

The Royals won its second PACWEST championship in three years Saturday by defeating the Vancouver Island University Mariners, 97-89, at Capilano University in North Vancouver.

Senior guard Coutrney Anderson scored 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Royals. He was also named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Cameron Morris had 19 points while his brother Reese scored 15 and had 10 rebounds. Both were also named to the tournament’s all-star team.

Terry Fox grad Josiah Mastandrea had nine points and three rebounds.

VIU will also compete at nationals as a wildcard entry. The Mariners are the defending champions.

Women win bronze

The Royals women’s team won bronze at the PACWEST championships, for the second time in three years, after defeating the Camosun Chargers, 74-63, on Saturday.

Sydney Fraess had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Douglas while Port Coqutilam’s Jessica Castillo contributed 14 points.
