Coquitlam RCMP said it has identified a potentially important witness in a crash two months ago on Mariner Way that took the life of a Coquitlam girl.

Last week, Mounties circulated images caught on a dash cam of a person at the scene when the collision took place who investigators believe may have seen what happened.

Thursday afternoon, Cpl. Michael McLaughlin told The Tri-City News Mounties have identified the man, who has been providing information to investigators.

"He has been completely cooperative with us and has been helpful," he said.

The collision occurred at around 3 p.m. March 25 at the corner of Mariner Way and Riverview Crescent. A black BMW collided with another vehicle, spun out of control and ploughed into five children waiting on a pedestrian island.

Deborah Seol, a Grade 8 student at Montgomery middle school, was among that group and was killed.

The witness is a Coquitlam resident who came forward this week after he saw a photo of himself in a local media report. Investigators were quick to note that he was a witness and not a suspect, and that officers do not believe he did anything wrong.

"He didn't think he saw anything important," McLaughlin said, when asked why the man left the scene. "That is a pretty common thing we run into."

He added that it is important anyone who witnessed the incident come forward and speak to police.

"Even the small things can be quite important when we are doing this kind of investigation," McLaughlin said, adding that the investigation is going well and the police had gathered a significant amount of evidence. "We are grateful when people can step forward and can help."
