Wear green on April 7 to honour Humboldt defenceman Logan Boulet

Students at two Port Coquitlam schools will lace up their skates on Monday, April 7, to build awareness about Green Shirt Day.

The city and the Canadian Transplant Association (CTA) are once again hosting the free skate for 100 kids at Central Community and Pitt River Middle schools, as well as their teachers and families, for the special day.

They will be joined at the rink by city councillors Nancy McCurrach, Steve Darling and Glenn Pollock.

The event aims to support healthy living and promote organ donation while also honouring Logan Boulet, a Humboldt Broncos hockey player whose parents gave his organs after he died on a bus crash with teammates in 2018.

Boulet, who saved six lives as a result of his donation, had told his mother and father earlier that he was registering as an organ donor following the 2017 death of his coach and mentor, Ric Suggitt, whose organs also saved six people.

The Logan Boulet Effect has prompted thousands of Canadians to register as organ donors in the defenceman’s name.

Nearly 90 per cent of Canadians say they support organ donation, but only 32 per cent have registered their intent. About 250 Canadians die each year while waiting for an organ transplant, the CTA says.

Meanwhile, Port Coquitlam City Hall will also be bathed in a green light on the night of April 7 to highlight the CTA campaign.

Residents can take photos of themselves in front of city hall and share them on social media with the hashtags #GreenShirtDay and #LoganBouletEffect, and tag @greenshirtday, to get the message out.
