Port Moody police say they may have prevented a tragedy after officers were recently able to intercept an impaired driver travelling along busy St. Johns Street.
PMPD spokesperson Const. Sam Zacharias said the department received multiple 911 calls on Jan. 10, 2025, reporting a westbound pickup truck weaving erratically into oncoming lanes.
Dashcam video shared by the department on its social media channels show the large, black pickup heading into the eastbound left turn lane at Moody Street than veering slowly back across the westbound lanes.
Zacharias said the truck was also speeding and then, at times, travelling “well below” the speed limit.
He said officers pulled the driver over on Clarke Road and after they determined he was impaired, his vehicle was impounded and issued a 90-day driving prohibition.
“He was also held in police custody until he was sober,” said Zacharias, adding impaired driving contributes to more than one in every five collisions on British Columbia roads that result in a fatality every year.
“It is so preventable,” said Zacharias. “We urge motorists to plan a safe ride home — be it rideshare, taxi or public transit.”
