An early morning stabbing near a Port Coquitlam elementary school has sent one person to hospital, according to RCMP.
Police responded to a report of a stabbing at 1 a.m. Saturday (June 4). on 2200-block Central Avenue, near Central Elementary.
The victim was reportedly stabbed by a group of "unknown assailants" near the park area at the school.
However, they were able to get to a safe location and call 911, stated spokesperson Cpl. Paige Kuz in a news release, which led to front line officers locating the victim, who was taken to hospital by ambulance.
An investigation is underway but Coquitlam RCMP confirm this was an isolated incident with just one victim being reported to police.
"Although the incident occurred on school grounds after hours, there does not appear to be any nexus between any students at the school and the alleged suspects," noted Kuz.
Police are urging anyone who may have been driving in the area at the time, or who may have CCTV footage in the area, or anyone who has any information regarding this investigation to call Coquitlam RCMP non-emergency phone number at 604-945-1550 and quote file-number 2022-13915.
This is the second stabbing in a month near a school in the Tri-Cities.
On May 8, a 29-year-old man was fatally stabbed at the back of Glen Elementary in Coquitlam.
Coquitlam RCMP stated at the time that the attack was not random but was not linked to lower mainland gang activity.
