The body of a man in his 50s was pulled from the Fraser River on Wednesday morning after being found by a tugboat operator.

Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung told The Tri-City News that police were called shortly before 9 a.m. to report a dead man floating in the water near Brigantine Drive and Schooner Street, off United Boulevard.

Officers guarded the body until the RCMP's forensic team and BC Coroner's Service arrived to retrieve him. Chung said fingerprints were taken from the man, which indicate he had not been in the river for long.

His death is not considered suspicious as he had no physical injuries or signs of trauma. The cause of death has yet to be determined and an autopsy is scheduled.

On Thursday, Chung said the man had been identified but his name is not being released pending notification of his next-of-kin.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550.
