Thousands of baby salmon were placed into small buckets and released upstream by Tri-Cities residents of all ages during the Fingerling Festival in Port Moody at Noons Creek Hatchery on May 6, 2023.

Garden sale

Load up on perennials, shrubs, trees and grasses at the annual Dogwood Garden Club plant sale, happening from 9 a.m. to noon at Hillcrest Middle School in Coquitlam (2161 Regan Ave.). Proceeds from the sale go toward demo workshops, horticultural scholarships and maintenance of the Dogwood Pavilion patio garden. Bring cash or cheques (no debit or credit cards).

Repair Café

City staff and volunteers with the Rotary Club in Port Coquitlam will fix or stitch up broken household items — at no cost — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the public works building (1737 Broadway St., Port Coquitlam). Donations are accepted.

Anmore South

Stop into the Anmore Community Hub (2697 Sunnyside Rd.) between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to find out more about icona Properties’ plan for the Anmore South lands. Representatives from Placemark, the lead design and planning consultant team for icona, will be onsite to answer questions about the proposed development.

Fingerling fest

Help release thousands of young chum salmon into Noons Creek during the annual Fingerling Festival at Noons Creek hatchery and at the Port Moody Recreation Complex (300 Ioco Rd.). The fest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is organized by the Port Moody Ecological Society. Port Moody residents on site can also pick up a free tree from the city (with proof of ID). Volunteers are needed.

Science kids

Check out the experiments and innovations developed by Tri-City students in grades 4 to 12 at Coquitlam Public Library’s Science Expo. The participants are vying for prizes, including a $1,500 scholarship for the first place senior winner. The event is on from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City Centre branch (1169 Pinetree Way).

Free comic book

Visit the Terry Fox Library (inside the Port Coquitlam Community Centre, 2150 Wilson Ave.) starting at 10 a.m. to get a free comic book to take home during Free Comic Book Day. The books are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is in partnership with Hourglass Comics and Games and Heroes For Sale. Attendees can also dress up in their favourite Star Wars costume for Star Wars Day, take part in the library’s scavenger hunt and enter a contest to win a Marvel or Star Ways kids graphic novel.

Legion music

Dance to the tunes at the Royal Canadian Legion branch 263 in Coquitlam (1025 Ridgeway Ave.) where Flashback takes the stage from 7 to 11 p.m. Food service is available.

Midsummer Night’s Dream

Watch young actors at Dr. Charles Best Secondary in Coquitlam (2525 Como Lake Ave.) play out the Shakespearean fantasy/comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the school gym. Directed by drama teacher Brad Case, the play starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15/$12 at the door.

Elephant Man

The story of the life of John Merrick, who was born with rare skin and bone diseases, comes to life at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam (1205 Pinetree Way) at 7:30 p.m. — courtesy of Stage 43 Theatrical Society. Written by Bernard Pomerance, the Elephant Man is the last play of the season. Tickets are $28/$24/$18.

Salsa time

Learn the basic Salsa, bachata and merengue moves with Salsa Dance Zone instructors Alberto Gonzalez and Teresa Szefler during a beginners’ lesson at 8 p.m. at the Port Coquitlam legion (2675 Shaughnessy St.) then dance the night away to the Latin beats until midnight. Admission is $15. The event is for adults only.
