Radio field day

Port Coquitlam’s Emergency Preparedness Communications group — or EPCOM, home of VE7PCE and the VA7RPC repeater — takes part in an annual North American contest called Field Day. Volunteers will be at Castle Park (2252 Castle Cres., Port Coquitlam) for the weekend-long exercise, designed to allow amateur radio operations to practise communication skills under primitive conditions with generator and battery-powered equipment and portable antennas to contact other amateur radio operators around the continent.

Original art

Pick up original artwork created by members of the Coquitlam Art Club for its summer show, which will be held today and June 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Centennial Room at Dogwood Pavilion (1655 Winslow Ave., Coquitlam). Admission and parking are free, and there will be draws and demonstrations. Also displaying and selling at Dogwood Pavilion at the same time will be a group of wood carvers, woodworkers and lapidary artists. There is no admission charge.

Blanket exercise

Be part of a free blanket exercise at Rocky Point Park (2800-block of Murray Street, Port Moody) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Organized by KAIROS Canada, the blanket exercise is an interactive and experiential teaching tool that looks at the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and settlers. Bring a blanket or chair and a filled water bottle. Be prepared to take off your shoes; wear comfortable clothing. The event is suitable for ages 14 and up. There is no cost to participate.

Korean BBQ
Port Moody's newest Asian grocery Meiga (221 Ioco Rd.) hosts its first-ever Korean BBQ Day. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., customers can enjoy a grilled Korean BBQ served on top of rice with sides (sour lobok, kimchi, potato, soybean sprout), as well as family-friendly community activities.

Rose show

The Fraser Pacific Rose Society will host its weekend rose show at Dogwood Pavilion (1655 Winslow Ave., Coquitlam) — with no cost to attendees, thanks to a Spirit grant from the City of Coquitlam. This year’s theme is “Only One Earth for Roses” and floral-themed vendors will be on site. The presentation runs from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 23.

Garage sale

Hunt for second-hand treasures at the Astoria Community Garage Sale, a fundraiser for the New View Society and the Low Entropy Foundation. Shop for gently used household goods, clothing, accessories and small furniture at the sale, held at the Astoria (2245 Kelly Ave., Port Coquitlam) form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

LOVE: A Musical

Enjoy the last run of the IOCO Players Theatre as it closes its company with their final production, LOVE: A Musical Theatre Concert Live Event. Featuring the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the show runs for eight performances — including today at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. — at the Inlet United Church at The Springs (2315 Spring St., Port Moody). Tickets are $30 online or $32 at the door (cash only). Directed by Mike Arseneault with musical direction from Kylie Lorenzana Fonacier, the concert features a live band.

Coast Salish

Witness a Coast Salish house post blessing ceremony and enjoy a feast at Rocky Point Park (2800-block of Murray Street, Port Moody) from 5 to 9 p.m. The event is in conjunction with National Indigenous People’s Day and includes First Nations carvers and performers that are part of the In the Presence of Ancestors project, as well as vendors and community groups. Bring a picnic blanket, plates and utensils for the family-friendly event, which is free; however, registration is required.

Latin fiesta

Get your dancing shoes on and grab a partner for the fourth annual Lafarge Park Latin Fiesta, happening from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Town Centre Park Plaza (1299 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam). Sponsored by the Tri-City News, the event starts with a beginners dance class led by Alberto Gonzalez and Teresa Szefler, from 6 to 7 p.m. There is no cost to attend.

The Coyotes

Julian, Michael, Jack, Carter and Steven — better known as The Coyotes — will perform at the Golden Parrots Pub (170 Golden Dr., Coquitlam) at 8 p.m. Tickets for the all-ages show are $10 at the door or online; no cost for kids under seven years old. One-quarter of ticket sales will be donated to the BC Children’s Hospital Music Therapy Program.
