Writers fest

Public libraries in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody host their inaugural Tri-Cities Writers Festival, a two-day event in person and online celebrating authors and books. The event kicks off today at 9:45 a.m. with a talk for scribes ages nine to 13 from writer David A. Robertson followed by Kenneth Oppel, who will speak to writers ages eight to 13. Adult writers can hear from Michelle Good at 12:45 p.m. and Iona Whishaw at 2 p.m. A cocktail reception (for ages 19+ and with a $10 ticket) is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the City Centre branch (1169 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) while a writers’ roundtable is from 7 to 8:30 p.m., also at the City Centre branch.

Food trucks

Head down to Lions Park (2300 Lions Way, Port Coquitlam) for the city’s second annual Food Truck Weekends. Today, Beaver Tails will be on site from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Art Shuffle

Explore Moody Centre in Port Moody and meet artists along the Art Shuffle, a community arts showcase featuring activities, a street market and demonstrations. More than 20 businesses and studios will have their doors open for the Shuffle, which runs from 4 to 9 p.m.

ScotFestBC

It's the opening night for ScotFestBC, a Scottish gathering at Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) that draws about 10,000 visitors a year. Tonight's free Pipes in the Park celebration starts at 6 p.m. with the SFU Pipe Band Drum Corps, RMM III Pipe Band, singer Bob Collins and champion highland dancer Marielle Lesperance taking the Main Stage at 6:20 p.m. The Tri-City News is a sponsor.

LOVE: A Musical

Enjoy the last run of the IOCO Players Theatre as it closes its company with their final production, LOVE: A Musical Theatre Concert Live Event. Featuring the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the show runs for eight performances — including tonight at 7 p.m. — at the Inlet United Church at The Springs (2315 Spring St., Port Moody). Tickets are $30 online or $32 at the door (cash only). Directed by Mike Arseneault with musical direction from Kylie Lorenzana Fonacier, the concert features a live band.

Free movie night

The Port Moody Film Society has its AGM and will run a free flick, Les Enfants du Paradis (Children of Paradise), in memory of Denise Meiners. The 1945 movie is considered one of the best from France and runs three hours, starting at 7 p.m.

Legion music

Dance to the music of Sweet Max, which plays at the Coquitlam branch of the Royal Canadian Legion (1025 Ridgeway Ave.) from 7 to 11 p.m.
