School byelection

Coquitlam residents can vote for a new School District 43 (SD43) trustee for Coquitlam at the polling stations, open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The byelection is to replace the seat vacated by Jennifer Blatherwick, now the MLA for Coquitlam–Maillardville. The candidates are (in alphabetical order) Coquitlam residents Frank Do, Dana Ebtekar, Candace Knoll, Rosey Manhas and, from Port Moody, Nash Milani. Read their bios here. Ancient India

Join the Wilson Seniors Advisory Board for its talk called "A Glimpse into the Ancient Indian Civilization," happening from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Mabbett Hall at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (2150 Wilson Ave., Port Coquitlam). Entry is free.

PoCo Kinsmen

Swing by the Port Coquitlam Kinsmen Hall (2175 Coquitlam Ave.) for an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. for the club's 60th anniversary celebrations. Tickets at $15 are also available for the dance from 7 p.m. to midnight, featuring the band Front Page.

Chess club

Find an opponent at the Poirier branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (575 Poirier St., Coquitlam) for a game or two of chess. The session at 2 p.m. is for all ages and skill levels; however, it’s recommended participants know the game basics.

Tri-Cities Pride

Join the Tri-Cities Pride Society at 2 p.m. at the City Centre branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (1169 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) for the non-profit's annual general meeting. Be a member and vote for the new board of directors.

Shield Maiden

Warrior, leader and motivational speaker Ingrid Larsdottir uncovers the untold truth of Viking shield maidens in a performance titled Shield Maiden by Melanie Teichroeb. The show at 3 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. is a study of sexism, gender bias, sexual freedom and trauma. Tickets are $47/$40/$16.

Legion music

Listen to the tunes from Vinyl at the Royal Canadian Legion (1025 Ridgeway Ave., Coquitlam). The band performs from 7 to 10 p.m.

Rockabilly, swing

Paul Pigat and his band Cousin Harley — made up of Jesse Cahill (tubs and pans) and Keith Picot (bull fiddle and washtub) — play the next Inlet Theatre Music Series concert at Inlet Theatre (inside Port Moody City Hall, 100 Newport Dr.) at 7:30 p.m. The trio has played for nearly two decades with such musicians as James Burton (Elvis Presley), Albert Lee (Emmylou Harris) and Brian Setzer. Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 at the door.

Indie tunes

Elise Boulanger and The Shorties perform at the Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) as part of the facility’s Rehearsal Hall Sessions, from 8 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $25/$16.

Salsa moves

Take a cha-cha-cha lesson then dance the night away with the Salsa Dance Zone at St. Clare’s Hall (2888 Delahaye Dr., Coquitlam) from 8 p.m. to midnight. The event is for ages 19+. Admission is $15 at the door.
