Ballet Victoria
The Gift of the Nutcracker is Ballet Victoria’s version of the popular stage production and runs from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam (1205 Pinetree Way) featuring Tchaikovsky’s score. Tickets are $37/$34/$16.

A Christmas Carol
Gather in the parlour at Mackin House in Coquitlam (1116 Brunette Ave.) from 6 to 9 p.m. to hear Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol being told by Patrick Stewart via the radio — just like in the olden days. There will be small breaks in between the narration and refreshments will be served. The free event is suitable to ages 12 and up; donations and registration are encouraged.

Check mate
New or experienced chess players are invited to try their hand with game opponents at the Poirier branch of the Coquitlam Public Library (575 Poirier St.) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Chess sets will be provided; the games are for ages 14 and up.
