Commuters between New Westminster and Coquitlam witnessed several hundred vehicle crashes around the Brunette Avenue-Highway 1 overpass last year.

The intersection, as defined by ICBC in its latest report, was listed as the fourth most dangerous in the Lower Mainland.

A total of 277 crashes took place in 2023, according to the provincial corporation.

That includes 113 that involved a casualty — injury or fatality — accounting for 41 per cent of the recorded incidents.

The intersection includes Brunette Avenue and its on- and off-ramps with the Trans-Canada Highway.

ICBC's data, as of June 30, shows two of the crashes involved motorcycles; none involved cyclists or pedestrians.

B.C.'s Lower Mainland saw 77,961 crashes last year, a three per cent increase from the 75,569 reported in 2022.

Fortunately, there was a decrease of reported injuries in 2023 with 39,807 compared to 40,814 in 2022.

On average, ICBC said 29 people die each year from a fatal vehicle crash in the Lower Mainland.
