These Coquitlam RCMP officers are going for a special spin on Saturday

A spin-a-thon on stationary bikes will take place at Coquitlam Centre mall on Saturday as three Coquitlam RCMP officers gear up for the annual Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast in September.

Retired Mountie Tess Landry (left) and Corp. Neil Roemer of Coquitlam RCMP are gearing up for their participation in Septembers Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast ride by pedalling stationary bikes for nine hours at Coquitlam Centre mall on Saturday, March 8.

Officers from Coquitlam RCMP are going for a spin.

But they’re not going to get anywhere.

Two of the detachment’s current members, and one who is retired, will be riding stationary bikes for nine hours at Coquitlam Centre on Saturday, March 8, beginning at 10 a.m.

The effort will raise money for research into childhood cancers, as well as Camp Goodtimes that provides a summertime respite for kids and teens experiencing the disease.

The static spin-a-thon is also training for the officers’ participation in the annual Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast, a 900-km ride around Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast over eight days in September by a peloton of police, sheriff’s department and border security officers as well as paramedics.

Last year's ride had a fundraising goal of $650,000.

“We’re training hard and fundraising even harder,” said Cpl. Neil Roemer, who will be joined by Const. Daniel Bouya and retired Mountie Tess Landry at the mall fundraiser as well as the Tour. “Even one child suffering from cancer is too many.”

The riders will be working up their sweat on Coquitlam Centre’s second level, between the Apple store and Bath & Body Works.
