Shooting for a cure and slam-dunking for cancer research.
Today (June 22), Coquitlam RCMP announced it's hosting a basketball tournament at Terry Fox secondary next month as part of ongoing fundraising efforts for the 2021 Cops for Cancer team, and the public is invited to bring their 'A' game.
Teams of three and players of all abilities are encouraged to sign up for the three-on-three format (and yes, some law enforcement officers may put a squad together themselves), with all proceeds being donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
The goal for 2021 is to collectively raise $300,000 for childhood cancer research and support programs via the Tour de Valley ride.
The tournament is set for July 10 from 9 a.m to 1 p.m., the cost is $40 per player and teams are asked to register in advance by July 7 via email: [email protected].
This is the latest initiative brought forward by Coquitlam Mounties as COVID-19 has cancelled a number of in-person fundraisers.
In May, Cops for Cancer announced a socially distanced recycling drive in which residents would bring their recyclables to any Return-It Express recycling depot as donations to the four officers representing the local detachment.
More information is in our previous article below.
“Health concerns have to come first, but it is important that we keep raising money for sick kids at Camp Goodtimes,” said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Ranjit Seehra in a statement about the campaign launch on May 26.
“Let’s face it, many of us have a pretty good pile of recyclables that we need to unload. Those sick kids would really appreciate the proceeds.”
If you're unable to participate in the basketball tournament, or you don’t want to donate recyclables, you’re encouraged to make an online donation to the Canadian Cancer Society — via its website — between now and the last day of the ride.
The officers representing Coquitlam are as follows (in alphabetical order):
- Const. Soumia Abboub
- Const. Hillary Murray
- Const. Brad Potter
- Cpl. Ranjit Seehra
Tour de Valley is scheduled to take place Sept. 20 to 24.
As of this publication, the fundraiser has brought in nearly 30% of the $300,000 goal.
