Port Moody has a solution for residents’ Christmas gift opening hangover.
The city is hosting a special central recycling service on Saturday, Jan. 4 to collect wrapping paper, boxes, Styrofoam and plastic film.
The event will be held in the parking lot of the Port Moody recreation complex (300 Ioco Rd.) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Styrofoam and plastic film must be bagged separately from other items.
Ribbons, bows, foil gift wrap, glass and regular household garbage will not be accepted.
According to Zero Waste Canada, Canadian households use about 545,000 tonnes of gift wrap and shopping bags through the holiday season, along with six million rolls of tape. That generates about a 25 per cent boost to the amount of household waste going to landfills.
Reearchers at the Stockholm Environmental Institute at the University of York said Christmas festivities, including travel, account for about 5.5 per cent of the planet’s total annual carbon footprint.
Port Moody firefighters will also be collecting natural Christmas trees at the nearby Inlet Centre fire hall (150 Newport Dr.) Jan. 4 and 5 to be chipped for the city’s paths and gardens.
It's one of several tree chipping events being held this weekend in the Tri-Cities.
