'Shogun' clinches three top awards at Primetime Emmys on Sunday

"Shogun" took the coveted Outstanding Drama Series prize, as well as drama accolades for its lead actors, Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, at last night's Primetime Emmys.

A television series filmed in Port Moody, Belcarra and Coquitlam during the Covid-19 pandemic took top awards on Sunday, Sept. 15 at the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards show.

Shogun, which was up for 25 nominations for the epic historical fiction, took the coveted Outstanding Drama Series prize, as well as drama accolades for its lead actors: Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.

In his acceptance speech last night, Sanada, who made Emmys history as the first Japanese actor to win best actor in a drama, thanked the production companies, FX, Disney and Hulu, for “believing in me."

"It was an East meets West dream project with respect. And Shogun taught me that when people work together, we can make miracles. We can create a better future together.”

In Shogun, Sanada played Yoshii Toranga, a Japanese lord and military strategist. He was competing for an Emmy against:

    • Hijack
  • Gary Oldman
    • Slow Horses
  • Dominic West
    • The Crown
  • Donald Glover
    • Mr. & Mrs. Smith
  • Walton Goggins
    • Fallout

 

 

Sawai, who portrayed the character Lady Toda Mariko, said in her acceptance speech she was “crying before my name was announced. I am a mess today.”

She thanked her mother, the cast and crew of Shogun and her fellow nominees:

    • The Morning Show
  • Imelda Staunton
    • The Crown
  • Maya Erskine
    • Mr. & Mrs. Smith
  • Carrie Coon

Like Sanada, Sawai also made Emmys history as the first Asian performer to win the award for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

 

 

The Primetime Emmys was hosted by Canadian actors Eugene Levy and his son, Dan Levy.

Last week, at the Creative Arts Emmys, Shogun captured a record 14 Emmys in these categories:

  • Outstanding casting for a drama series
  • Outstanding cinematography for a series (one hour)
  • Outstanding guest actor in a drama series
  • Outstanding main title design
  • Outstanding period or fantasy/sci-fi hairstyling
  • Outstanding period or fantasy/sci-fi makeup
  • Outstanding period costumes for a series
  • Outstanding picture editing for a drama series
  • Outstanding production design for a narrative period or fantasy program (one hour or more)
  • Outstanding prosthetic makeup
  • Outstanding sound editing for a comedy or drama series (one hour)
  • Outstanding sound mixing for a comedy or drama series (one hour)
  • Outstanding special visual effects in a season or a movie
  • Outstanding stunt performance
